Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This work is part of a series of "artist's proofs" in which Manlio Bacosi explored his drawing technique, enhanced by hand-painted watercolors. This allows us to appreciate a Bacosi who is more grounded in reality and formal values ​​than in his more typical abstract work. The composition thus achieves a strong rendering of the subject (whether a human figure or a vase of flowers) even through the simple formal means of the graphic line. Indeed, the artist needs only a simple, loose, sinuous stroke to convey the fullness of the volumes onto the paper and enhance the figures with a sculptural effect. In some areas, subtle nuances of diluted color are added to enhance the sensation of softness. Unlike most of Bacosi's work, these proofs lack the usual abstract and dreamlike characterization, instead displaying the traits of a highly refined illustrator.

Manlio Bacosi was a painter originally from Perugia, born in 1921 and died in 1998. He trained under Leo Ravazzi and Gerardo Dottori. Beginning in 1947, he was featured in numerous exhibitions not only in Italy but also abroad. Among the most important are the 1972 retrospective in Todi and solo exhibitions in Recanati for the Leopardi Festival and in Montecatini in 1975.
