The work displays a marked expressionist vocation, which emphasizes the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a highly nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brücke movement in Germany. The artist Manlio Rondoni, as a representative of existential realism, expresses his anxieties precisely through an expressionist stylistic register, in a highly original form that also touches on informalism.

In this work, we can see how painter Manlio Rondoni's aesthetic is based on a remarkable synthesis of the subject. The representation is reduced to the essentials in a highly synthetic form, composed of evanescent compositional lines, which hark back to a strongly expressionist aesthetic. The space of the work is also concentrated, squashed into the foreground, and depth is revealed in an anomalous manner. Consequently, the human figure, dramatically inhabiting that narrow space, suffers the same consequences. It appears practically folded in on itself in a gesture of profound agitation. Formally, Manlio Rondoni's existentialism is expressed through a complex pictorial style in which a deliberately rough and coarse stroke is nourished by a color diluted with gray and cold hues.

Manlio Rondoni, Velletri, 1940-2022. A graduate of the Scuola Superiore and Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, he was awarded the Gold Medal for best student in Scenography in 1966 and, at the age of 28, received the Pallade Veliterna International Prize. A teacher of painting at Rome's art high schools, a cultured and refined artist, versatile and multimedia, he achieved success in various cultural fields. In over fifty years of uninterrupted artistic activity, he successfully participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
