Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.
In this canvas, Eugenio Mantegani also uses an impressionistic technique to bring freshness to the subject and highlight the moisture that, from the canal bed to the clouds in the sky, unifies the entire scene. However, in this composition, a greater emphasis is placed on drawing. The composition is strongly spatially structured through a very clear perspective grid that establishes a diagonal vanishing point to the right, giving the subject a highly theatrical feel.
Eugenio Mantegani, 1929-2005, Milanese painter. Known for his lively and poetic depictions of Milan, Mantegani developed his artistic language through a remarkable impressionistic technique that, in addition to bringing freshness and immediacy to the urban landscape, adds a poignant poetic quality to the scenes.
