The work portrays an elderly man with a heavily lined face, rendered in a caricatured yet intense manner. He wears a jacket, shirt, and tie—elements reminiscent of the bourgeoisie of the early twentieth century—but his appearance is far from idealized. His bushy eyebrows, prominent nose, large ears, and suspicious sideways gaze contribute to an expression that is both wary and thoughtful. His mouth is tight, his face lined with wrinkles and an uneven beard. The expression is distinctive.

The painting is created using a technique that creates strong contrasts, similar to engraving or pyrography on wood. The lines are bold and well-defined, while the colors are warm and monochrome, in earth tones. Campus combines caricature drawing with a thorough study of expression. The facial features are deliberately exaggerated, making the character alive, recognizable, and full of personality. The expressive style, at times grotesque, recalls some caricatures of the past, yet always maintains a human and respectful tone.

Manuel Campus (Domus de Maria, CA – 1928) is a Sardinian artist: painter, sculptor, printmaker, and master ceramist. After holding important teaching and artistic positions, including directorship of the Rieti Art Institute, he devoted himself to bronze sculpture and graphic art, developing a personal and highly expressive language. His work is distinguished by its social commitment, pacifist commitment (he became an exponent of the nonviolent movement), and a humane, never banal poetics. His works, often ironic and melancholic, are included in numerous public and private collections. He lives and works in Bazzano di Spoleto, in a farmhouse-museum that preserves his creative universe.
