Description of the work
Description of the work
Themes related to astronomy or science fiction in art can, in many cases, be traced back to the typical aesthetics of Surrealist art, where the existence of other worlds or parallel dimensions can be connected to our subconscious. However, when science fiction becomes a celebration of technology, it's impossible not to identify its origins in Futurism, which made the celebration of progress one of its main themes. Coinciding with the development of the science fiction genre in cinema, around the 1960s, some painters also began to explore this theme in art, such as the celebrated Chesley Bonestell.
Manuela Sorrentino is a painter inspired by the rational principles that govern nature, even from a purely aesthetic perspective. Thus, for her, spirals and concentric movements are a source of constant fascination. These are motifs that can also be found when looking at the firmament, as demonstrated in this Galaxy 3, and which Manuela Sorrentino places at the center of her canvases. However, her rationality is always combined with a painterly instinct, as her brushstrokes are almost gestural in portraying objects with a nuanced and textured touch, making the work more dynamic.
Manuela Sorrentino is a Roman artist. A science and mathematics teacher, she approached painting as a self-taught artist, achieving remarkable technique, especially in portraiture (she even painted a portrait for Rita Levi Montalcini). Much of her work focuses on the nautilus, the spiral shell that inspired the classical golden ratio. Since 1997, she has been engaged in a significant artistic career, participating in numerous exhibitions and shows, receiving critical and public acclaim.
