In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is simultaneously charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. In the case of Marc Chagall, reality is completely transfigured in a synthesis of Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. The artist begins with everyday situations, inspired by popular folklore, and elevates them to the realm of fairy tales and magic through his original formal development.

This work is a beautiful graphic work featuring some of Marc Chagall's most iconic and beloved motifs. The central element, as in many of his other compositions, is flight, which for the Belarusian-born painter is the emblematic expression of the transition from reality to a dreamlike and surreal dimension. In this case, the familiar pair of lovers, a central theme in Chagall's work, are about to take flight on horseback. The scene unfolds in a simple interior with an exuberant vase of flowers. This is a typical setting for Chagall's aesthetic, blending humble, folksy reality with the magic of fairy tales. Formally, we note how in his graphic work the artist abandons the elegant deconstructions inspired by Cubism for a decidedly more synthetic style. Each figure is resolved with swift black lines, and the color is applied in light washes.

Mark Zakharovič Shagal was born in Vitebsk, Belarus, in 1887. A naturalized French artist, he took the name Marc Chagall and died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 1985. By the 1910s, he was a well-known artist in St. Petersburg and moved to Paris, where he frequented Delaunay, Apollinaire, and Léger. In 1917, he took part in the Russian Revolution and became art commissioner for the Vitebsk region. In 1923, he returned to Paris permanently and became a French citizen in 1937. During the Second World War, Chagall, of Jewish origin, was forced to emigrate to the United States. In 1949, he returned to Europe, settling in Provence.
