Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.
Marcello Antonelli, particularly renowned for his dreamlike landscapes, displays a slightly different approach in this work. The setting is always the same: a mysterious and enigmatic lunar landscape. This time, however, the space is completely occupied by a biomorphic entity that, with the movement of its coils, dictates the composition's rhythm. The accentuated appearance of a biomorphic organism clearly harks back to certain creatures by Salvador Dalí, but Antonelli eliminates any connection with reality, almost reaching the point of informality. Fascinating elements of ambiguity are also present, such as the presence of nails within a predominantly organic entity.
Marcello Antonelli was born in Pesaro in 1932 and passed away in 2009. From 1949, he worked as a decorator at Ceramiche Mengaroni, then moved to Milan, where he specialized in glass-ceramic art. After attending the Brera Academy, he exhibited at the Solferino Gallery. In the 1960s, he held a series of solo exhibitions in his hometown. In 1969, he held solo exhibitions in Padua and Venice. Other important exhibitions took place in 1972: Galleria La Cave in Treviso, Galleria Sistina in Rome, and Galleria dell'Azienda di Soggiorno in Iseo. He also exhibited his paintings abroad, in cities such as Paris, New York, Grenoble, and Cologne. He has received numerous national and international awards and recognitions.
