Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Marcello Scuffi's artistic production draws on the great Tuscan pictorial tradition that extends from the Renaissance to Ottone Rosai. A tradition built on a taste for compositions of an absolutely rational nature. Scuffi's paintings present objects with clear volumes, constructed on pure lines in artificially perspective spaces. Geometry clearly prevails over nature, creating a metaphysical sense of enigmatic suspension. Nothing intervenes to break this compositional spell: indeed, even on a formal level, Scuffi steers clear of any pictorialism or atmosphericism that might undermine the pure materiality of his objects.
Marcello Scuffi was born in Tizzana in 1948 and lives and works in Versilia, between Quarrata and Marina di Pietrasanta. Self-taught, his career began in 1970, when painting became his profession. Since 1972, he has participated in at least thirty solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous group exhibitions. His work is well known not only in Italy, but also in France, Belgium, and Switzerland. His entire oeuvre is inspired by the "return to order" of twentieth-century Italy and the primitivism of painters such as Rosai, Carrà, and Casorati.
