Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Primarily a sculptor, Marcello Tommasi also produced a highly interesting pictorial production. While his portraits confirm an interest in plasticity, adhering to a twentieth-century poetics, his landscapes display a more pronounced lyricism of color. This is evident in this painting, which demonstrates a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely into the foreground, with no allowance for spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the richly textured brushstroke intervenes, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, fleshes out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role.
Marcello Tommasi (Pietrasanta 1928, Lido di Camaiore 2008) was born into a family of artists, the son of the sculptor Leone Tommasi and brother of the renowned painter Riccardo Tommasi Ferroni. Between 1948 and 1958, he frequented Pietro Annigoni's studio, drawing, painting, and gradually turning his attention to sculpture. Marcello Tommasi lived primarily between Florence and Versilia, often traveling to his beloved Paris. His works are found in the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints at the Uffizi, the National Museum in Warsaw, the modern art galleries of Barcelona, Malaga, Piacenza, and the Vatican; at the Azorin Museum in Monóvar and the Birthplace Museum of Michelangelo Buonarroti in Caprese Michelangelo; at the National Library of Paris, the University of Pisa, and the Institute of Art History of the University of Florence.
