Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
The manner in which the subject is depicted draws on hyperrealist currents. Hyperrealism aims for a completely objective representation of reality: the artist's desire is to reproduce what he sees without any interpretation. In this painting, Carlo Monaldi fully embraces a hyperrealist aesthetic. This can be identified, first and foremost, in the precision with which every detail is faithfully reproduced on the painted surface with a cold objectivity. Furthermore, the scene's composition is photographic, reflecting modern image reproduction techniques. But above all, the execution is based on a hyperrealistic language. There is no pictorialism, no atmospheric impressions to indicate the fusion between subject and space. Everything is illuminated by a uniform light that unifies the work in a desire for pure objectivity.
Marco Monaldi trained in Florence at the Academy of Fine Arts under Viviana Cosci. His exposure to the classical environment of the Renaissance city was crucial to his development. Since 2005, he has formed a significant partnership with Mario Vespasiani, with whom he has undertaken a research journey around the world. In 2014, he moved to Brazil. In 2016, he returned to Italy and resumed his painting career.
