Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Marco Novati's drawings and tempera works, as in this case, are extremely interesting for appreciating a less formal side of his artistic practice. What is particularly remarkable is how, with just a few strokes, the artist manages to bring his subjects to life. Through a few rapid pictorial strokes, Novati imbues the representation with great vitality and freshness. The subject, however, possesses a good visual description, thanks to an image construction based essentially on color. Ultimately, the artist always maintains a perfect balance between naturalistic rendering and a certain pictorial complexity, but in a less formal and freer work like this, the latter prevails, strongly imbuing the image with existential and psychological vibrations. Compared to his formal portraiture, where Novati usually employs a darker palette, in this tempera, light and sunny colors prevail.
Marco Novati was a Venetian painter, born in 1895 and died in 1975. Primarily self-taught, he trained in the studio of Emilio Paggiaro. Facing financial hardship due to family problems, he developed his dark realism. He had numerous group and solo exhibitions, some posthumously. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale.
