With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Marco Novati's drawings are extremely interesting for appreciating a less formal side of his artistic practice. What is particularly remarkable is how, with just a few strokes, the artist manages to bring his subjects to life. Through a few rapid graphic strokes, Novati imbues his depictions with great vitality and freshness. The subjects also possess good visual detail, thanks to the use of subtle shading that indicates their plasticity.

Marco Novati was a Venetian painter, born in 1895 and died in 1975. Primarily self-taught, he trained in the studio of Emilio Paggiaro. Facing financial hardship due to family problems, he developed his dark realism. He had numerous group and solo exhibitions, some posthumously. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale.
