Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is simultaneously charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In this sacred painting by Marco Orsi, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly, and everything is transfigured into an extremely experimental language, always striving for strong expressiveness.
In this work, painter Marco Orsi's style is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extract the true essence of the sacred scene and communicate it on the canvas in a vibrant manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces the subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also the protagonist, conveyed through his brutal gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Marco Orsi's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice, namely that of favoring a pronounced monochrome of brown tones, from which the images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the paint.
Marco Orsi was born in Montalto Bormida in 1926 and passed away in 1999. He held solo exhibitions in many cities in Italy, France, Switzerland, the USA, Japan, Belgium, Malta, Uruguay, and Sri Lanka. He participated in approximately 900 group exhibitions worldwide and 130 solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad, receiving significant awards and recognition. He is included in the leading contemporary art bibliography, and the Bolaffi catalogue dedicated a monograph to him, introduced by Paolo Levi. His works are featured in museums in Huesca (Spain), Moscow, Addis Ababa, New York, Paris, Madrid, Stockholm, and in the modern art collections of the Quirinale, the Vatican Palace, and many public institutions and private collections.
