Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an artist's copy, as it depicts part of "La Grande Odalisque" by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, a French painter among the leading exponents of Neoclassicism. The original painting was created in 1814 and is housed at the Louvre in Paris.
Marco Paniello's reinterpretation of this work by Ingres follows the canons that inspired the French painter. That is, the pursuit of a pure form, classical by definition, and an execution rooted in the principles of harmony and balance typical of the Renaissance. Thus, the artist recreates the elegant curve of the odalisque's back, which offers the expansive and sculptural volume of her body. Paniello, like Ingres, emphasizes the purity of form by limiting the painterly effects, using a more compact technique, similar to that of the Mannerists.
Marco Paniello was a painter born in Verona in 1943 and died in Tenerife in 2005. His favorite subjects are female nudes, clowns, and author copies.
