Luigi Marcon - The Word Became Flesh

The iconography of the Adoration of the Magi is linked to the Christian feast of the Epiphany, the first divine manifestation of Jesus Christ. This religious tradition, which later merged with artistic tradition, is based on the words of the Gospel of Matthew, which speaks of the Magi who were guided to Judea by a star and who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus. The scene of the Adoration of the Magi, iconographically, is practically a variant of that of the Nativity. It is distinguished, especially in medieval and modern representations, by the presence of the procession of the Magi, which often served as a pretext for wealthy patrons to be depicted with members of their families adoring the Child Jesus. Let us recall two very famous examples: the Adoration of the Magi by Gentile de Fabriano and that by Benozzo Gozzoli.

The work is a beautiful example of Luigi Marcon's engraving art. The subject is realized with a synthesis that delineates forms in a rapid yet complex manner. The composition is strongly expressionist, based on a frenetic rhythm of broken and diagonal lines. This also influences the construction of space, which is structured through a complex system of overlapping planes. Formally, the work's dynamism is further confirmed by the layering, consisting of glazes and transparent overlays.

Luigi Marcon was born in Tarzo in 1938 and lives and works in Vittorio Veneto. Known primarily as an engraver, he trained in Venice, first at the Art Institute and later at the International Center for Graphics. Since 1960, he has participated in numerous national and international graphic design exhibitions, earning several awards. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. For many years, he has dedicated himself to teaching intaglio printing. He also designed the "800 Years of Landshut" stamp, issued in Germany in 2004.
