Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
As we can see from her landscapes, Maria Berg is a painter who demonstrates a profound post-Impressionist maturity. The scenes are all created with color, applied with broad, dense strokes. The objects are skillfully synthesized with a few touches in a two-dimensional space. It is therefore the dense, material color that takes center stage, creating a landscape that tends to be lyrical and expressive rather than naturalistic.
Maria Berg demonstrates a remarkable pictorial technique based on a synthetic but dense application of colour and a composition with broad brushstrokes of post-impressionist inspiration.
