Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Maria Carla Turchetto's informal art begins with the figurative and culminates in a pure composition of dense, textured colors. Indeed, although the artist begins with phenomenal reality (as hinted at by some of the work), Turchetto's gestures are so vigorous that they transform the entire composition. Yet her paintings always maintain a light, ethereal consistency. This is thanks to her choice of colors, with their soft hues, and a technique that, though gestural, proceeds through transparent glazes.
Maria Carla Turchetto is a Novara-based painter with her own unique take on informal art. Her favorite subjects are flowers, which she transfigures into ethereal, light gestures.
