Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Madonna is probably one of the most popular iconographies throughout the history of both Western and Eastern art, most often represented with the iconographic motif of the Madonna and Child. The Madonna appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
This work is part of a series in which artist Maria Murgia's aim is to offer a simplified interpretation of reality, seeking new values of purity in representation. In these paintings, we sense a naïve pictorial approach, yet it is expressed through a highly classical and traditional approach. The language is essentially figurative. However, the artist manages to infuse tradition with her originality and personal touch, precisely through her pursuit of purity of representation that defines her style. Concretely, this is expressed through a fluid technique, which resolves objects with a dense and concrete layering. Thus, even in the simplicity and purity of her lines, Maria Murgia manages to enhance the formal values of her subject. From a chromatic perspective, a palette of bright and vibrant colors prevails.
Maria Murgia is an artist originally from Ossi, Sardinia, where she was born in 1935. Since 1974, she has lived in La Spezia, where she was the director of a nursery school. It was during those years that her passion for art began. Her first exhibition was held in 1975 at "Studio 13." The following year, it was at the "Sagittarius" gallery in Terni. She also participated several times in the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto. In the 1980s, Maria Murgia participated in numerous art fairs in Italy and abroad.
