Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
The painting is an excellent example of Mariano Imperatori's pictorial output. Aesthetically, the nude transcends phenomenal reality, undergoing Expressionist distortions. The face, in particular, is depicted as a mask with bold, black features. From a pictorial perspective, Imperatori employs a highly complex technique, employing broad brushstrokes that, placed on different planes, construct the image, exploring it in depth. The painterly approach exalts plasticity, following a school of thought originating in Cézanne.
Mariano Imperatori was a painter originally from Porto San Giorgio in the Marche region. He was born in 1921 and died in 1979. His paintings are held in numerous public and private collections, not only in Italy but also abroad (France, Belgium, Germany, Colombia, and the United States). His name has appeared in important catalogues such as Enciclopedia Seda, Il Quadrato, Criterium, Gente Nostra, Evoluzione del lavoro, Le Arti, Bolaffi Arte, and the Revue Moderne des Arts and de la Vie. He participated in numerous exhibitions and received important awards.
