Marietto Vergara - Madonna

The subject of the painting follows the famous "Madonna del Parto" (Madonna of Childbirth), painted by Piero della Francesca in the second half of the 15th century in Monterchi. The iconography of the Madonna del Parto, depicted alone in the act of exposing her womb, began to spread in Tuscany starting in the 14th century. In Piero della Francesca's version, the Madonna appears within a circular curtain, theatrically unveiled by two angels. The entire composition, centered on the circular dome of the curtain, is designed to emphasize the volumes of the subjects in the space.

Marietto Vergara's replica of Piero della Francesca's model adopts the technique of his illustrious predecessor, the fresco, of which he offers us a portion mounted on canvas. Iconographically, Vergara fully respects the model, replicating it without any changes. In terms of form, however, we see a more personal interpretation. The artist offers a quicker, more sketchy execution than his Renaissance predecessor.
