Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
The painting is a clear example of Marino Marini's interpretation of the figure of the knight and the horse, a highly relevant theme for him. Indeed, Marini believed that the figure of the equestrian monument was an interpreter, in the history of civilizations, of the diverse sensibilities that had spanned the centuries. Marini's interpretation of this theme in this painting is one of such extreme expressionism that it almost reaches the pinnacle of abstraction. The subjects are virtually reduced to pure forms, taking on a powerfully archaic quality. The line is heavily marked, the fields created by the thick black mark are completely filled with color. The artist's mark is gestural, charged with meaning.
Marino Marini, born in Pistoia in 1901 and died in Viareggio in 1980, was both a painter and a sculptor. After an initial academic education, he devoted his artistic research to the pursuit of pure forms. His artistic career unfolded in a climate of "return to order," or the recovery of plastic and figurative values, which characterized his sculptural production in particular. He was greatly influenced by classical sculpture, as well as medieval art. His aesthetic is characterized by stylized and elongated forms.
