Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
This portrait by Marino Marini confirms the Pistoia master's remarkable artistic talents, including his graphic skills. We can see how the woman's face is delineated with a thin, black line that is simultaneously succinct and expressive. With just a few strokes, the artist captures the subject's features while simultaneously attempting to convey a psychological description. Chromatically, the artist enhances the work's expressive power with transparent washes of color that blend across the surface of the paper. Aesthetically, the subject is consistent with Marino Marini's canons, with his penchant for classic yet elegantly elongated forms.
Marino Marini was born in Pistoia in 1901 and died in Viareggio in 1980. He was both a painter and a sculptor. After an initial academic education, he devoted all his artistic research to the pursuit of pure forms. His artistic career unfolded in a climate of "return to order," or the recovery of plastic and figurative values, which characterized his sculptural production in particular. He was greatly influenced by classical sculpture, but also by medieval art. His aesthetic is characterized by stylized and elongated forms.
