Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is part of a collection in which Mario Bellagamba showcases his technical prowess in graphic art. The evocative views and popular genre scenes are born from an elegant yet lively line, from a rapid, highly animated hatching. This hatching forms a system of lines from which the objects take shape. The beauty of the engravings lies in the fact that the artist, through this rapid graphic style, manages to convey a sense of volume and, consequently, space, while remaining true to his realist aesthetic.
Mario Bellagamba, painter and engraver, was born in Ancona in 1930. He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Urbino and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He began engraving in 1955 and has since produced nearly a thousand plates using all chalcographic techniques. He has participated in the most important engraving art exhibitions in Italy and abroad, including the 1st National Exhibition of Contemporary Figurative Etchings "BLACK&WHITE" in Modica in 1996. He is included in three editions of the Repertory of Italian Engravers, edited by the Cabinet of Ancient and Modern Prints of the Municipality of Bagnacavallo. His works are included and listed in the Prandi catalogs of Reggio Emilia.
