Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso. Mario Berrino, too, in several works, falls into this category, and his favorite subjects are precisely fishermen and farmers, depicted through his original and personal artistic language, which combines contemporaneity with an authentic and sincere description of a typical Ligurian reality. Mario Berrino's pictorial production is characterized by the complete synthesis of reality in pictorial matter. In this painting, too, we can see how the subject is structured in dense, material color and how the forms are synthesized, in an essential manner, by the painter's gesture. The entire painting, then, is characterized by a dynamic and iridescent surface. For it is essentially in color that Mario Berrino finds his lifeblood, in his ability to create luminous and dynamic chromatic impastos. Mario Berrino was a painter and an important figure from Alassio. Born in 1920, he died in 2011. Besides being an artist, he was also a tireless promoter of initiatives. It is worth remembering that, from his idea, together with the writer Ernest Hemingway, the famous Muretto d'Alassio was born in 1953. From 1976 onwards, he dedicated himself entirely to painting. His paintings are permanently exhibited in two galleries dedicated to him in Alassio and Monte Carlo.
