Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this painting, we see the extraordinary pictorial quality Mario Carraro achieved in the portrait genre. With an extremely delicate touch, the artist captures the subject's physiognomy in a light depiction, yet with remarkable psychological concentration. Above all, the formal quality of the paintwork captures the viewer's attention: using the expressive qualities of color, Carraro manages to achieve atmospheric, luminous, and simultaneously existential vibrations. The back of the work is painted with a work scene, also of impeccable quality. In this case, Carraro relies on a realist register, yet always with his light and delicate touch. Thus, even in an intense atmosphere of blue tones, the representation is characterized by a suffused lyricism.
Maria Carraro was born in Mestre in 1896 and died in Venice in 1978. He trained at the Accademia Albertina in Turin and the Istituto Superiore d'Arte in Venice. His many group exhibitions include: Bevilacqua La Masa, Milan, Padua, Burano, Rome, London, Chelsea, Bruges, and Ghent.
