Mario Ceroli - We were all there

Ceroli's seminal and essential gesture was to work with natural materials, primarily wood (but also earth, glass, and ice), to emphasize the primary element, the emerging meaning of real things, the symbolic value of the work, and the artist's founding gesture. He thus stripped the noble, stately material of sculpture of its value, imbuing it with a new and powerful capacity for representation. With his forms carved from raw wood, his citations from art icons, his ironic mimesis, and then his large-scale "representations," Ceroli made the idea physical, translating it into gesture and matter, and at the same time, occupying space with a stunning proliferation of forms, in keeping with the intent of the artist-faber of medieval origins who seeks to depict reality and the human environment in all its declinations, but in doing so transcends them by sublimating them.
