Description of the work
Description of the work
Mario Ceroli's work draws on several typical themes of contemporary art from the 1960s and 1970s. His artistic language, in fact, draws on what are commonly called "Poetics of the Object," through the use of wooden artifacts (which can sometimes also be simple everyday objects). Furthermore, the use of a handcrafted material, with such a raw and primitive aesthetic as wood, also draws Ceroli closer to the influences of Arte Povera. Finally, Pop Art must certainly be mentioned as a fundamental reference point in Ceroli's research, in its reinterpretation of certain types of mass-produced, serialized images and their redefinition in a new context through an artistic process.
In this sculpture, Mario Ceroli plays with his own artistic language. The medium that best represents him, the three-dimensional wooden silhouette, is transferred to a different material, namely bronze. The sculpture was crafted as if it were wood, aiming to achieve those primary values, similar to Arte Povera, that underpin Ceroli's artistic practice. The composition is powerfully symbolic in its essentiality, built on harmonious curvilinear movements. The treatment of space is distinctive, particularly dramatic in the opening on the left, which allows a glimpse of an undefined, metaphysical place.
Mario Ceroli was born in Castel Frentano in 1938. He is one of the most important contemporary artists and set designers. He trained in Rome under Leoncillo, Pericle Fazzini, and Ettore Colla. In the late 1950s, he discovered wood, which would become his preferred material for artistic production. In the 1960s, fascinated by Pop art, he began producing the serialized silhouettes that became his trademark. In 1966, he won an award at the Venice Biennale. In 1967 and 1968, he participated in the Arte Povera exhibitions. He also worked extensively as a set designer, collaborating primarily with the Teatro Stabile di Torino.
