Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the material or gesture with which they compose their works. In his pictorial production, the artist Mario Colucci displays a highly eclectic spirit, ranging from romantic, classically inspired seascapes to the most extreme experimentation with a thoroughly Informal language.
We are faced with a perfect example of the Informal art of Neapolitan artist Mario Colucci. In this context, the painter completely abandons figuration to translate his sensitivity and perception of the world into pure gesture. Indeed, Mario Colucci's Informal art, rather than emphasizing material or color, focuses primarily on the pictorial gesture expressed on the support, but always following a clearly defined aesthetic line. The tendency is to produce circular pictorial marks that intersect and multiply at the center of the painting, with a certain degree of "action painting" as even the smears and drips of paint become part of the painter's gesture and creativity. The final result is always highly coherent and compositionally balanced, even from a chromatic perspective.
Mario Colucci was born in Naples in 1915 and passed away in 1993. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in his city and taught at the Art School. He participated in numerous exhibitions, both group and solo. His participation in the Rome Quadriennale in 1949 is particularly noteworthy.
