Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers, or plants in general, as independent subjects, began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the world of flowers and plants, as they offered an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers and plants were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers and plants also became a way of interpreting reality.
While the final result of Mario D'Anna's works can be described as abstract, we are faced with a painter closely tied to sensory reality. Indeed, D'Anna's starting point in developing his paintings is Nature itself. The artist focuses on the study of Nature, focusing on specific details in the execution of the work with the intent of translating their true essence to the canvas. D'Anna's approach somehow resembles the exponents of the "Last Naturalism" movement, who enlarged plant elements macroscopically, thus achieving abstraction. Mario D'Anna elaborates this approach along with his agitated gestures, which hark back to Abstract Expressionism. Indeed, the gestural brushstrokes and the paint itself become the primary expressive medium in conveying the artist's sensitivity and perception of Nature to the work.
Mario D'Anna, Rovigo 1933 - Rome 2009. He studied in Milan and Como, where he worked until 1996. In 1997 he moved to Rome. In 1964 he joined the group of artists that gravitated around the “Corso Venezia” Gallery in Milan, interested and involved in the cultivation of the neo-figurative trend and the recovery of the image. He was part of the “7 Brianza” and “7 Italia” groups, exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions. In the years 1967-70 he began a lively activity linked to the art of copperplate engraving. Since 1978 he has taught painting techniques and chromatology at the “Leone Leoni” Higher Institute of Restoration directed by Aldo Galli. He has participated in various Ex Libris exhibitions, and is included in the portfolio published by BNEL for the International Congress in Frederikshavn – 24-28 August 1988 in Denmark. He has continued to participate in several competitions and won an award at the "National Watercolor Exhibition" - Durini Foundation in 1991, an award at the "Segantini International Drawing Exhibition" in 1992, and a further award at the "Bice Bugatti International Painting and Sculpture Exhibition" in 1993. In 2003, he was appointed to organize the Jubilee 2000 Book Competition at the Municipality of Pescara, editing the volume presented to the Holy Father John Paul II.
