Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape, throughout history, has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his definition of landscape, Mario Erdini presents an extremely synthetic approach, bordering on expressionism. Each element is reduced to the essential, starting with the space, which becomes two-dimensional and folded in on itself. The objects are extremely few and sparse, identified by a sharp black line, yet vibrant with life and existentialism. This line describes elementary volumes, which, in turn, are made vibrant by the artist's complex application. Erdini's technique of inter-marble mosaic is dense with material and structure, arranged layer upon layer in a Cezanne-like exploration of the elements. Even the choice of color is based on a tendentially expressionist approach, with a clear predominance of brown and gray tones that have a clear symbolic and spiritual value, again linked to the material and the earth.
Mario Erdini is an artist originally from Trento. Self-taught, he is known for his paintings in inlaid marble mosaic, a new technique in which the material used is powdered natural marbles—white, black, red, yellow, and green—mixed with special binders and applied with a spatula to wooden boards. Once dry, the painting is sanded, inlaid, re-polished, and finished to resemble an unbreakable slab of marble.
