Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape depicted by painter Mario Gambetta not only embodies the legacy of a long and prolific school of landscape painting, but is also enriched by an artistic sensibility and an uncommon capacity for observation. Landscapes, whether naturalistic or, as in this case, urban, have been and continue to be a significant pictorial genre. The tradition behind this genre is not yet exhausted and still retains essential traits such as the rendering of architectural and other elements, the atmosphere evoked by the view, and perspective. The rendering of these landscapes can be dictated by the emotional state of the viewer: it can range from the real and natural to the evocative and emotional, reaching peaks of abstraction.
Mario Gambetta's painting style reveals a remarkable and uncommon capacity for observation and investigation. This inclination shines through in his works, where we find a formal and coloristic exploration. The drawing undoubtedly relies on a meticulous and perfectionist technique, filled with refined and natural color. Light and shadow shape the entire painting, enhancing the drawing's perspective. We find a landscape that expresses a strong sentimentality, evident in the muted tones. The composition is governed by a firm perspective.
Born in Rome in 1886 to Ligurian parents, Mario Gambetta was a versatile and cultured artist. A self-taught painter, he fought in the First World War between 1915 and 1918. In the years following the war, he lived in the town of Albisola (Savona), where he was appointed director of the Alba Docilia ceramics factory, founded in 1919. This inspired him to experiment in various artistic fields, including decorative ceramics for architectural structures and metal engraving. His particular inspiration as a painter was landscape painting and portraiture. He participated in numerous exhibitions, including the Venice Biennials of 17th, 19th, 20th, 22nd (solo exhibition), and 23rd; the Rome Quadrennials of 1931, 1935, 1939, 1943, 1947, and 1956; the Brera Biennials of 1925 and 1954; Turin Biennials and Quadrennials; Awards in Bergamo 1940. He also participated in numerous exhibitions abroad: New York, Paris, Warsaw, Berlin, Stockholm. From 1935 to 1967 he held numerous solo exhibitions. In 1938 he was named an academician of merit at the Ligurian Academy in Genoa. His works are held at the Gallerie d'Arte Moderna in Genoa, Rome, Turin, and Savona; at the Civic Museums of Turin and Savona; and at the Musée des Arts in Paris.
