Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting's subject is revealed by its title: Bergamo Hills. As we'll see in his biography, the painter was born and raised in the province of Bergamo, and his work is closely linked to an idyllic depiction of the landscapes where he grew up. In this case, the landscape is intuitive, but given the uneven brushwork, it can be interpreted as an allusion, where each viewer is free to see what best reflects their own feelings: fields, flowers, trees in varying shades of green, farmhouses. The element that allows us to internalize the painting as a landscape from the very first moment is the sky with the solitary cloud.
The painting's style is highly expressive, almost abstract. What anchors the painting in reality is primarily the division into three thirds, with the lower thirds representing the landscape and the upper third the sky. The brushstrokes are clearly intuitive; they aren't trying to recreate reality, but rather to convey a feeling—the joy and serenity these landscapes evoke. In this painting, the artist plays with various shades of green, encouraging us to associate these hues with recognizable plants. Therefore, subconsciously, what might be a Bergamo hill for the painter might be a local landscape for the viewer, precisely because the mind is drawn to fill in the missing information.
Mario Gotti is a painter born in 1930 in Sorisole, in the province of Bergamo. This Lombard painter specializes primarily in paintings that narrate the nature, fields, and hills of his area. Gotto's style is highly personal, evocative, and internalized. We could define it as impressionistic; he takes what he sees, metabolizes the feeling, and manages to recreate it with dense, rich brushstrokes on the surface of the painting. Thanks to this style, the impact on the viewer is immediate, requiring little explanation because the painting speaks directly to the soul, reflecting in the viewer the same feelings that moved the painter to create his art. While the style is not naturalistic, the painter succeeds in his aim of conveying the green of the meadows, the silence of the mountains, and the peace of remote places still untouched by human intervention.
Gotti died in 2017.
