Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is inspired by the character Don Quixote de la Mancha, created by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes in the early 17th century. The character of Don Quixote, a central figure in world literature, representing an ideal to be pursued, has inspired many artists. Pablo Picasso, for example, dedicated a series of engravings to Don Quixote, celebrating one of the most important figures in his nation's literature. In this tribute by sculptor Marino Haupt, Don Quixote appears in his traditional iconography, based on the surviving illustrations of Cervantes' novel. He is depicted as a tall, lanky knight astride a nag. On his head, he wears a basin as a helmet and is armed with a long lance and a round shield.
The style employed in this lithograph is typical of the engravings created by the sculptor Marino Haupt, which embodies a vigorous expressionism. The figure is extremely synthesized, losing its volumetric consistency and physiognomic details to be transformed entirely into a pictorial vibration. The form of Don Quixote on horseback is maintained, but the substance that fills it is the pure gesture of the artist, who lets his instincts flow with a frenetic and dynamic pictorial style. The expressive potential, combined with the elegance of the composition, make this engraving an extraordinary testimony to Haupt's artistic output.
Marino Haupt was a Finnish sculptor and engraver, born in Helsinki in 1942 and died in Rome in 2004. His artistic production can be defined as expressionist and is identified with a dramatic force achieved through the vigor of the gesture in the engravings and the deformation of volumes in the sculpture.
