Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This work is part of a series of landscapes by Mario Madiai, created in the 1990s, which express a classical influence that harks back to the Italian pictorial tradition, particularly the Renaissance. The composition is always highly dynamic, built on deep perspective and an ideal, harmonious balance between the elements. Indeed, the artist depicts large portions of landscape that fade into the horizon with a natural blend. He masterfully defines space through subtle shifts of tone, framing the entire landscape in a coherent and unified atmosphere. Consequently, the role of light is crucial, creating a striking interplay of shadows and nuances. Madiai's pictorial style in these works is meticulous in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering, occasionally alternating with a more painterly touch to give the composition greater freshness. The chromatic palette is vivid and brilliant, reflecting a palette full of light.
Born in Siena in 1944, Mario Madiai studied at the Lucca Art Institute. He has lived in Livorno since his youth and began exhibiting there in 1971. Since then, a long series of successes has made him renowned worldwide. "Flowers, Leaves, and Water," "Roses," his landscapes, and his interiors are some of his most famous series.
