Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this painting falls within the genre scene category, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. Mario Puopolo's artistic production also features many genre scenes inspired by everyday and popular life.
Mario Puopolo's painting style is grounded in remarkable technique and exquisite sensitivity. His figuration is concrete, offering the viewer a clear representation of the subject. Yet he manages to transfigure everything through a lyrical sense rooted in the application of color. Puopolo works with light, almost transparent glazes that imbue scenes with delicate nuances and a magical atmospheric haze, or imbue them with an impressionist freshness.
Mario Puopolo was a Roman painter. His teachers were Mario Barberis and Luigi Polverini. After the war, he joined the Gruppo Romano, with which he participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. He received various awards, including the Michetti Prize, the Vasto Prize, and the Garda Prize.
