Description of the work
Description of the work
The depiction of animals in art has ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true portraits from life, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In this painting, the artist Mario Puopolo focuses his research on the figure of the horse. A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for painters, it has always been a challenge to represent it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering.
In Mario Puopolo's works dedicated to the figure of the horse, the composition is distinguished by a perfect balance between the naturalistic rendering of the subjects and a celebration of the animal's inherent dynamism. This dynamism is accentuated right from the composition, which features diagonal cuts or directional lines appropriate for depicting the horses' running. The subjects' bodies are clearly delineated, structured by a bold black line. The artist's brushstrokes, however, are, as always, very rapid and complex, full of vibrations that highlight the speed and dynamism in a decidedly expressive manner.
Mario Puopolo was a Roman painter. His teachers were Mario Barberis and Luigi Polverini. After the war, he joined the Gruppo Romano, with which he participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. He received various awards, including the Michetti Prize, the Vasto Prize, and the Garda Prize.
