Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Mario Puopolo's painting style is grounded in remarkable technique and exquisite sensitivity. His figuration is concrete, offering the viewer a clear representation of the subject. This is evident in this female nude, which presents a strong characterization that reflects its realism. This expressive concreteness is expressed in the figure's plasticity and complex movement. Despite this concreteness, Mario Puopolo manages to transfigure everything through a lyrical sense based on the application of color. Puopolo, in fact, proceeds with light, almost transparent glazes, which characterize the scene with delicate nuances, alternating with bold strokes that emphasize the subjects' volumes. His palette is generally distinguished by a propensity for brown tones.
Mario Puopolo was a Roman painter. His teachers were Mario Barberis and Luigi Polverini. After the war, he joined the Gruppo Romano, with which he participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. He received various awards, including the Michetti Prize, the Vasto Prize, and the Garda Prize.
