Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "Abstrahere," meaning to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images. The process of abstraction from reality undertaken by Mario Rocca, however, does not draw on these illustrious examples, since his reconstruction of the world does not occur through a geometric vision. His style is, in fact, grounded in what we might call a gestural interpretation of plasticism. Indeed, the plastic sense is what most emerges from the Chiavari-born artist's works, but in an execution that has much in common with the methods of Abstract Expressionism.
Compared to Mario Rocca's easel work, we can see how this lithograph highlights the artist's characteristic plastic sense even more. The space of the work is undoubtedly three-dimensional, and the forms created by the artist inhabit it, arranging themselves on different levels in a highly complex construction. This complexity also stems from the fact that Rocca, in a sort of "horror vacui," tends to overfill the space, overloading it with forms. We can discern images in the light coming from the source in the upper right: in the background are curvilinear architecture, and anthropomorphic subjects move in the foreground. But for Rocca, clarity of the scene is less important than the possibilities for formal development it offers. The subjects have a strongly emphasized plastic structure, their materiality is concrete, almost reaching a hyper-realistic biomorphism. The relevant fact is that Rocca manages to achieve this strong plasticity through a gestural execution, typical of the Informal and abstract-expressionist currents (but we cannot fully speak of Informal precisely because of the presence of plastically highlighted forms).
Mario Rocca was born in Chiavari in 1951, where he still lives and works. A painter, illustrator, and printmaker, he gradually moved from a naturalistic interpretation of reality to a process of abstraction that led him to reconstruct the world through gestural execution with a strong visual sense. The artist's works have always been highly acclaimed by both critics and the public and have been exhibited at various national and international events.
