Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Santini is very attentive to a naturalistic rendering of the landscape and possesses a confident technique that allows him to faithfully capture what he sees on canvas. The atmospheric rendering is flawless, both of the quality of the air and the humidity of the water. The objects depicted blend delicately with the surrounding space, thanks to a highly refined sfumato technique. The twilight light permeates the entire scene, and the artist is also capable, with quicker brushstrokes, of capturing all the luminous vibrations of the leaves or the surface of the water. The work is also very balanced compositionally.

Mario Santini was a Roman landscape painter (1927–2015). He displayed a high level of technical skill, reflecting an academic background. He remained faithful to a concept of art based on the imitation of nature and allowed little subjectivity. His style, therefore, was highly realistic, yet exhibited some traits of idealization.
