Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
In his works, Mario Tommaseo typically takes a slice of reality and transfigures it into an almost surreal dimension, somewhere between dream and lyrical vision. His language is figurative; indeed, he sometimes delves into the details of objects with his excellent painting technique. However, everything is immersed in a magical atmosphere thanks to the use of bright colors and a certain objectivism in the representation that transforms reality into a wondrous apparition. The composition, again from a chromatic perspective, appears very balanced in a harmony of tones.
Mario Tommaseo was a popular figure from La Spezia, born in 1920 and died in Arcola in 2006. He was a football player and coach, but also an opera singer and a poet, and at age 50 he began painting. He created over 100 works, and his work was praised by critics such as Gerardo Podenzana. Throughout his career, he exhibited his work in over 100 exhibitions, with great success. He won numerous awards, including the "Monte Carlo Oscar," the "Franciscan Smile" in Bologna, and won the international competition "The Gospels According to the Naif" organized by the Vatican City in the 1980s with his work "Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene." His work was published in elementary school textbooks published by De Agostini and, between the 1970s and 1980s, in the textbook "Ciao," published by Salani.
