Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
As we can also see in this painting, Mario Vespasiani's conception of art necessarily begins with reality, which is then transfigured through the expressive and symbolic potential of color. The subject depicted, in fact, displays a paucity of physiognomic details, of objective particulars that could identify it or even place it in a social context. Vespasiani's existentialist painting is not interested in external social reality, but rather in the inner reality of man, which the artist explores through his expressive means. The pictorial deformations that characterize this subject are precisely the vehicle Vespasiani uses to express his existentialist anxieties.
Mario Vespasiani is an artist from the Marche region, born in 1978 and residing in Ripatransone. Vespasiani not only devotes himself to painting, but has also experimented with various artistic forms, including photography, performance, writing, and installation. To date, he has exhibited throughout Italy, in galleries, museums, and places of worship. In 2011, he exhibited at the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi in the Turin venue, and with Imago Mundi at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. He recently exhibited in Venice and Chiavenna as part of the group show "Our Place in Space," promoted by NASA and ESA, which will continue on a world tour in 2018.
