Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This work is a typical subject in Mariolino da Caravaggio's oeuvre, and alongside his artistic copies and hyperrealistic pastiches, he also painted these delicately colored seascapes. The composition is based on the intertwining diagonal lines of the sails, interacting with the regular forms of the buildings in the background. In terms of color, the cool, compact masses of water and sky emphasize the brilliance and vivacity of the central section. This vivacity is also achieved through the lively painterly style of the highly elaborate and dynamic application.

Mariolino Feraboli was an artist originally from Bergamo, better known as Mariolino da Caravaggio or the Forger (1923-1992). A painter specializing in reproductions of works by famous artists and still lifes, his works are included in numerous private collections.
