Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Madonna is probably one of the most popular iconographies throughout the history of both Western and Eastern art, most often represented with the iconographic motif of the Madonna and Child. The Madonna appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced).
An extremely eclectic figure in the artistic world, Mariolino Da Caravaggio fueled his pictorial production with numerous sources, among which inspiration from the art of the past undoubtedly stands out. In the case of this Madonna, there is a clear reference to the fifteenth-century Renaissance tradition, in the definition of an aesthetic ideal, harmonious and full of grace, undoubtedly inspired by Raphael, but even more so by Perugino. Mariolino's interpretation of the ancient model, however, is always original and personal. His pictorial style, characterized by a lean and objectifying form, is characteristic. The exaltation of the figure's plastic qualities predominates, through a compact brushstroke and a marked drawing framework. The palette is highly evocative, distinguished by the use of intense, bright colors, in keeping with the fifteenth-century model.
Mariolino Feraboli was an artist originally from Caravaggio in the province of Bergamo, born in 1923 and died in 1992. Better known as Mariolino da Caravaggio or the Forger, he was a painter specialized in the reproduction of author copies and still lifes; his works appear in numerous private collections.
