Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Mariolino da Caravaggio's eclectic personality led this painter, known primarily for his masterly copies and hyperrealist pastiches, to also create refined landscape paintings. This work expresses a profound classical influence, drawing on the Italian pictorial tradition, particularly the Renaissance. The composition is highly dynamic, built on profound perspective and an ideal, harmonious balance between the elements. Indeed, the artist depicts a large portion of landscape that fades naturally into the horizon. He masterfully defines space through subtle tonal transitions, framing the entire landscape in a coherent and unified atmosphere. Consequently, the role of light is crucial, creating a striking interplay of shadows and nuances. Mariolino da Caravaggio's painting style is meticulous in achieving a perfect naturalistic rendering, occasionally alternating with a more painterly touch to give the composition greater freshness. The chromatic palette is vivid and brilliant, reflecting a palette brimming with light.
Mariolino Feraboli was an artist originally from Caravaggio in the province of Bergamo, born in 1923 and died in 1992. Better known as Mariolino da Caravaggio or the Forger, he was a painter specialized in the reproduction of author copies and still lifes; his works appear in numerous private collections.
