Description of the work
Description of the work
The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which led to the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material with which they compose their works. Marius's work is also inspired by Informal art, albeit in a wholly original interpretation.
Marius's style is grounded in a highly synthesised process that leads him to abstract phenomenal reality to the point of achieving results that can be ascribed to the poetics of Informal Art. We see this in this landscape, where the artist still leaves a trace for the viewer to maintain a connection with the subject (the view of an urban agglomeration), but the execution is powerfully expressionist and abstract. The absolute protagonist is the pictorial gesture, which, together with the dense color, becomes the artist's primary means of expression. Thus, the faint trace of perceptible reality, which could still be discerned in an almost elusive skyline, is fully identified with the painter's gesture, expressed in bold and energetic brushstrokes. Everything is transfigured into the expressive power of pure pictorial matter, thanks to the painter's skill in modulating it and rendering it chromatically dynamic.
The artist Marius stands out for his original pictorial production, in which sensitive reality is subjected to a process of abstraction so profound that it leads to Informalism. Also consistent with the Informal aesthetic is the artist's emphasis on material and pictorial gesture.
