Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is part of the project “Codicum Facsimiles Bibliothecae Apostolicae
Vaticanae”. The perfect reproduction is offered by the Latin Codex Reginensis 438
which was most likely a commission from Louis the German,
Carolingian of East Franconia. The monk-poet Wandalbert von Prum
he composed a list of martyrs in verse dedicating his poem
to Emperor Lothair I. The dedication to the emperor is a precious fragment of
German history. The original manuscript has unfortunately been lost, but the only
existing copy, the Reichenau Codex, is in many respects a
remarkable artistic achievement. In the code, which belonged to Queen Christina
of Sweden, you can taste a mixture of many cultural trends of the time that
It is difficult to find in other literary works of the early Middle Ages. Among the
topics covered, the main religious holidays, the cult of the Saints, the Empire and
high dignitaries, traces of profane cults, seasonal allegorical scenes and even
zodiac signs on gold backgrounds.
