MASGALANO 2024

The MASGALANO is the prize that, in the city of Siena, is awarded to the Contrada whose Comparsa is the “best” for elegance, dignified bearing and coordination during the historical parades preceding the Palio.
Historically, the Masgalano has specific requirements that must be respected by the artist, both in form and iconography. It began as a silver bowl, then gradually became more like a plate, and more recently, a sculpture.
The Masgalano created by Lara Androvandi combines the metal sculpture with an important pictorial part, with the creation of the hyper-realistic eye of a young Palio horse: a horse with a strong, proud gaze, curious to face the destiny that awaits him.
But it is only gradually that the more or less hidden details of this work are discovered, including the reflection of the entire profile of the city of Siena in the pupil, symbolizing the belonging of this much-loved animal to the Tuscan city and, therefore, to the Palio.
This work, created in gouache and graphite on Ebru paper mosaic, was first scanned and then printed at high resolution on a special silver-plated brass plate, thus becoming, as per the artist's initial plan, the focal point of the sculpture.
This is, therefore, the original painting that gave life to MASGALANO 2024.
