The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. Roberto Masi's world is tied to the small, everyday realities of villages or simple characters, always depicted from behind.

Roberto Masi's style has been defined as Primitivism, as his manner is in stark contrast to contemporary, expressionistic pictorialism, advocating instead a language based on drawing and the exaltation of formal values. The definition of primitivism is all the more fitting because this pictorial conception harks back to the traditional values ​​of 14th- and 15th-century Italian painting, based on rationalism and accentuated geometry. In the case of the present work, however, the popular character of Masi's artistic production prevails, in depicting a quiet episode of everyday life. The preference for clean lines and compositions constructed according to essential forms remains constant, however.

Roberto Masi was born in Florence in 1940. He developed his artistic career by frequenting the artistic circles and studios of Pietro Annigoni, Enzo Pregno, and Antonio Bueno. His encounter with Pilade Giorgetti was crucial. He attended the Libera Scuola di Nudo at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and in 1970 joined the artistic group "Segno Rosso." In 1972, he began exhibiting at the Studio d'Arte il Moro, where the group was based. However, he soon distanced himself from the group, pursuing his own independent path. He also earned recognition and worked as a set designer. In 1974, his encounter with Lucia Burgassi of the Galleria Cavour led to an intense period of exhibitions and work, culminating in 1980 with the interest of Renzo Spagnoli Arte. The artist gained recognition and recognition nationally and internationally with important exhibitions. In 1991, he began collaborating with the Orler Galleries, which organized a major exhibition in Venice in 2002. In 2007, he published the volume "Sintesi di un realismo magico" (A Synthesis of Magical Realism). His works are exhibited worldwide.
