Description of the work
Description of the work
While at first glance the canvas may seem to represent an undefined form, the eye eventually adjusts and recognizes the figures. It is a landscape in which we recognize a body of water, a river, reflecting tall shrubs, barely hinted at by a few textured brushstrokes of paint. In the distance, we glimpse a trellis with its wires, the only sign of human presence in the contemporary view. The artist is well aware of the foundations of contemporary views, drawing on 19th- and 20th-century artists, such as Turner or the Impressionists, as well as the landscape lessons of landscape masters like De Pisis. Massimiliano Alioto manages to reinterpret the vision and the space observed to the point of abstraction. The artist maintains an emotional personality that he manages to extrapolate into the pictorial realm. The pictorial style is also aided by the medium used, jute, which, unlike canvas, is thicker, making the paint more intense and textured, rough. The resulting effect is that of a thick, undefined brushstroke, which with a few gestures manages to compose the surrounding environment, albeit in a non-precise manner. This device, however, leaves room for the artist to capture the light within the canvas. The light, in fact, manages to be rendered on the objects, with a decisive, rapid brushstroke, with an incisive touch. A Puglian artist who lives and works in Milan, Massimiliano Alioto began drawing as a child, studying at art high school and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He began exhibiting his work around Italy, finding acclaim, and from then on, his artistic career took off. His exhibitions include numerous: Made in Japan, at the Spazio Consolo in Milan, and Altre Direzioni, at Milan Central Station, Venice Santa Lucia Station, Turin Porta Nuova Station, Bologna Central Station, Florence Santa Maria Novella Station, and Rome Termini Station. In 2003, he participated in the IV Cairo Communication Award at the Palazzo della Permanente in Milan, and in 2004, he had his first exhibition in New York at Scope Art. That same year, he published a monograph for the Rex Built In collection. In the early 2000s, numerous other exhibitions were held, including the Miracolo a Milano exhibition at the Palazzo della Ragione in Milan, and the 4 Way Street exhibition with Agostino Arrivabene, Giorgio Ortona, and Bernardo Siciliano at Palazzo Te in Mantua. In 2013, he participated in the 55th International Art Exhibition – the Venice Biennale, Syrian Arab Republic Pavilion, curated by Duccio Trombadori. His projects have been published by numerous publishing houses, including Vallecchi, Damiani, Silvana, Electa, Maretti, and De Luca.
