Massimo D'Amato - The Rain

During World War II, numerous civilian massacres occurred in Tuscany; on August 23, 1944, in the Fucecchio Marshes, 174 people died in the water, inside their homes, and in the fields. In 2004, sixty years later, I exhibited my project in several towns in the area. For a full year, starting in 2003, I took black-and-white photographs of the landscape to represent the flow of history, which begins in autumn (after the massacre, the return to everyday life) and concludes in spring (the period before the massacre). In this project, the atmospheric events (rain, fog, wind, and even flowing water) represent the different periods and moments in each person's life. ("The Marshes of Memory")
